Tips vary based on conditions. However these basic tips are beneficial for the most common of Trees installed and grown in South East Texas LandscapesThese are the 3 basic tips that you can do for your new tree to help the tree have the conditions needed to mature properly and survive.
- Do not over water the tree. For example if you are using a gator bag or tree watering bag. Fill the tree once a week for the first 2 months. After that its a good idea to cut it back to every two weeks. Eventually a good rule of thumb is after 6 months remove the bag. Trees don't like "their feet" or roots wet. if you have a bubbler the process is the same. Eventually you want to turn the bubbler off.
- Super Thrive (root stimulator) the tree. https://superthrive.com/faqs/ The process is by using a bucket adding one gallon of water and one cap full of the ingredient and slowly pouring the mixture on the rootball of the tree. This is called a soil soak. You want the rootball to soak up the mixture, you don't want any run-off. Do this once a week for the first two months. After that you can do it periodically until your tree is established.
- Mulch. Shredded hardwood or pine bark organic mulch is great to use around trees. Every spring mulch the ring that you have around your tree 2"-3" thick. This will help the soil to keep moisture, the nutrients in the mulch break down and the soil absorbs the organic nutrients. Mulch also helps with soil compaction. Also it is a great weed control. Remember to keep about a 1' away from the flare or bottom of the tree with your mulch.
